Deriving Optimal Design from Simulation Data

SPE has the ability to import process case from simulators (starting with PROII) plus the graphics from the simulation diagram. Once in SPE, the data will be organized in cases and relationships created between the cases and the unit operators. Many simulation runs are made during the conceptual design to study all options and to design and optimize the process. SPE is able to quickly sort the cases and help the process engineer make selections and additions to create the design case that will set requirements for equipment and proves lines.

Creating Many Deliverables from Single Source

SPE is able to import the simulation diagram from the simulator solution and use that in the PFD edition to have it evolve as the final PFD deliverable. By using our display set and label technology, we can create associated deliverables such as MSD and DTDP Diagrams. As they are based on the same single source data it will keep these consistent.

API Layer to Support Custom Calculation

Several calculations are performed during the conceptual design process. Some are commonly used, such as HTRI, and others are many be developed in-house. SPE has an easy-to-configure API that will link these external solutions to the process source data and perform calculations to size equipment, trays, lines, and more.

Creating the Conceptual Model

An important part of the FEED package is the 3D model, for cost estimating, constructability, safety, process optimization, and more. SPE has the ability to interface with ASD Optiplant and create various plant layout scenarios so the best option can be selected in terms of cost, safety, and operability.

Cost Calculations

Cost is an important factor when deciding to move ahead with a project. Through the same API as the calculation programs, SPE can connect with external cost-estimating programs to determine the cost of different design scenarios to enable the owner to make the right decision.

Moving to Detailed Design

Once the green light is given to move the conceptual design into the project phase, the data created in SPE can be moved forward to Smart Engineering and Design Solutions. The PFD can be expanded into the P&ID in SmartPlant P&ID, and the process data to design the instruments can be moved to SPI. The data created in SPE can flow downstream to users in the detailed design phase.

Re-use of Good Design

We often want to reuse a proven design process into a new project but still make modifications if need be. In SPE, the design case can be modified and associated to an existing PFD making use of the existing configurations. This leverages best practice designs.
